June 2009 sees two new releases from Moby; his new full-length studio album 'Wait For Me' released June 30th, and the first single 'Pale Horses' released June 23rd. Sweetening the 'Pale Horses' single further are remixes from by Gui Boratto, Apparat, Ben Hoo and Jason Bentley .
“I wanted the vocals on this song to sound old and almost conversational,” says Moby. “On ‘Pale Horses’ my friend Amelia is singing; she's holding a $20 microphone, no headphones, just singing it with me holding the lyrics in front of her pointing to the words. She didn’t know the song before she sang it, so her performance has a vulnerable and almost naïve quality. After recording her vocals i thought they still sounded too polished, so I put her vocals on an old 1/8” tape machine and re-recorded them back into the song. I wanted them to sound as if they were recorded 50 years ago instead of in 2008.”
This method is in keeping with the DIY element of the album. Moby recorded the album in his home studio, drew the album artwork with a black sharpie on copy paper, asked his friends to record the vocals and asked another friend, photographer Jessica Dimmock, to take the press photos.
In addition, friend Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, Throbbing Gristle, M83) helped mix the record. Moby and Thomas mixed the record using purely analog equipment in true stereo, akin to how records were mixed in the late 60's. As a result, the songs sound pretty amazing on headphones. The songs also sound best when listened to as a cohesive body of work. While each track stands on its own merit, ‘Wait For Me’ was recorded and arranged to be listened to from start to finish.
The album track 'Shot In The Back Of The Head' is currently available as a free MP3 download on Moby.com. Moby.com also feature's the track's video, a dark and moody animation by David Lynch.
It's fitting that Lynch directs this debut video, as it was a 2008 speech by Lynch that informed Moby's inspiration for the album.
"David was talking about creativity, and to paraphrase, about how creativity in and of itself, and without market pressures, is fine. In making this record i wanted to focus on making something that i loved, without really being concerned about how it might be received by the marketplace. As a result it's a quieter, more melodic, more mournful and more personal record than some of the records i've made in the past"
In today's single-driven music industry an album that holds together as a collective entity is a rarity. An album that holds itself to standards higher than commercial measures of success is even more rare. |

Goldfrapp Release New Single 'Rocket' in March Remixes from Richard X, Penguin Prison, Grum and Tiësto
Musical pioneers Goldfrapp announce their brand new single ‘Rocket’, to be released through Mute March 8th (UK) / 9th (US) 2010. Fizzy with inspiration, ‘Rocket’ is a goose-bump brilliant tune and is taken from the duo’s fifth album ‘Head First’, released in March.
‘Rocket‘ is written and produced by band mates Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory and comes complete with new mixes by Richard X, Penguin Prison and Grum, and Tiësto, and is accompanied by a fabulous video directed by Kim Gehrig (Calvin Harris, Primal Scream, Santogold).
Meanwhile ‘Head First' is Goldfrapp's most powerful trip to date, a speedy rush of synth optimism, euphoria, fantasy and romance. With life affirming lyrics and stellar production it lifts off at full tilt and takes us on a journey to the heart of 2010.
The diversity, ambition and direction of the new album highlights Goldfrapp as true agenda-setters and modern musical icons. ‘Head First' follows the critically acclaimed ‘Seventh Tree', and is the latest in a brilliantly consistent body of work - from the captivating electronic balladry of Mercury nominated debut ‘Felt Mountain' and its distorted-dancefloor follow-up, ‘Black Cherry' to the glitterball glamour of ‘Supernature' which came out in summer 2005 and went on to sell over a million copies worldwide.
'Rocket is basically brilliant – a charismatic and elegant modern pop tune with lyrics that are by turns wistful and dynamic' - Popjustice

BUZZCOCKS REISSUES RELEASED FEBRUARY 9, 2010 INCLUDING PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS,
JOHN PEEL SESSIONS, SINGLES, AND LIVE VERSIONS
Another Music in a Different Kitchen
Love Bites
A Different Kind of Tension
Buzzcocks and Mute will release the original Buzzcocks’ albums, Another Music in a Different Kitchen, Love Bites, and A Different Kind of Tension from 1978 and 1979 February 9, 2010. The reissues will also feature previously unreleased tracks, John Peel sessions, associated singles, demos, backing tracks, and live versions.
Buzzcocks’ first album, Another Music in a Different Kitchen - a major punk landmark and a great record to boot - was released almost exactly thirty years ago. It’s full of fire, wit, speed, philosophical lyrics and gender explorations, as well the sly psychedelia that always made Buzzcocks stand out from the pack. This disc contains the full Another Music in a Different Kitchen album with the relevant John Peel session and another disc of various out-takes and the full live show recorded at the Electric Circus in October 1977: the venue’s last night and the moment when Buzzcocks began to go national.
Love Bites is the second disc covering the associated singles: “Love You More” and “Promises”, and two Peel sessions as well as thirteen demos from summer 1978. As an added bonus, there is the full concert from the Lesser Free Trade Hall in June 1978, an exercise in instant nostalgia filmed by Granada TV under the guidance of Tony Wilson. Love Bites came at a troubled period for the group and the culture that had formed them. After the demise of the Rotten Sex Pistols in January 1978, Punk was seen as over. Buzzcocks were in danger of becoming yesterday’s future. But 1978 was an extraordinary year for the group. They released two albums, five singles – with two in the UK top twenty – and toured relentlessly.
This new edition of A Different Kind of Tension pulls together all the associated singles – five of them, including Parts 1–3 recorded with Martin Hannett and later collected on an American mini-album – as well as the last track the group recorded in their first incarnation: “I Look Alone”. As an added bonus, there is a whole disc of demos from the period, including several hard to find songs like “The Drive System”, “Jesus Made Me Feel Guilty”, and Paddy Garvey’s heart-rending “Run Away From Home”. The set is rounded off with four BBC recordings from the period, including an early outing for “Everybody’s Happy Nowadays”. This key song set the tone for this much-misunderstood period in Buzzcocks’ history.

The Knife In Collaboration With Mt. Sims And Planningtorock - "Tomorrow, In A Year" AN OPERA ABOUT CHARLES DARWIN BY THE KNIFE
IN COLLABORATION WITH MT.SIMS AND PLANNINGTOROCK
DIGITAL ALBUM RELEASE FEBRUARY 2, 2010
CD IN STORES MARCH 9, 2010
Colouring Of Pigeons’ streamed on theknife.net
The Knife, in collaboration with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock, are to release the studio version of the opera ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’, will be in stores March 9, 2010. The album will be released on digital download sites February 2, 2010.
Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book ‘On the Origin of the Species’, The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme. They extensively researched Darwin related literature and articles, with Olof attending a field recording workshop in the Amazon to find inspiration and to record sounds.
‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ is a unique musical project. Richard Dawkins’s gene trees have formed the basis of some of the musical composition, artificial sounds have been mixed with field recordings, with the music inspired by everything from the different stages of a bird learning its melody, to a song based on Darwin’s loving letters about his daughter Anne. These are compositions that challenge the conventional conception of opera music.
Pushing the experimental process further still, composer, choreographer, costume designer and set designer worked separately, only coming together 3 and a half months before the first performance of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ in Copenhagen on the 2nd September 2009. Described as “shifting the position of operartic art in a single leap”, further performances of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ are confirmed to take place in Athens (8-9 Jan), Stockholm (29 Jan-1 Feb), and Munster (5 June), with further dates to be announced.
Olof Dreijer says: “At first it was very difficult as we really didn’t know anything about opera. We’d never been to one. I didn’t even know what the word libretto meant. But after some studying, and just getting used to opera’s essence of pretentious and dramatic gestures, I found that there is a lot to learn and play with. In fact, our ignorance gave us a positive respectless approach to making opera. It took me about a year to become emotionally moved by an opera singer and now I really do. I really like the basic theatrical values of opera and the easy way it brings forward a narrative. We’ve approached this before in The Knife but never in such a clear way.”

Sisterworld is Liars boldest and most exhilarating record to date. The album was written and recorded in Los Angeles by Liars and Tom Biller and is an invigorating summation of their career so far. remote from the false promises and discarded dreams amassed in LA. In it Liars explore the underground support systems created to deal with loss of self to society.
