Frank became Mute's first signing in 1979. He went on to record numerous albums and singles under the names of Fad Gadget and, later, Frank Tovey, collaborating with an ever-changing line-up of musicians.

As well as being a considerable presence and influence on the independent and electronic music scenes in the 80s and 90s, Frank was notorious for his live performances during which he presented considerable danger to himself, his fellow musicians and, on occasion, the audience.

Sadly, in April 2002 Frank suffered a massive and unexpected heart attack and died.
