Unreleased material
Fad Gadget was working on some new material at the time of his death- is there a chance of any of this being released, even on a limited run? Even a maxi-single of some of this material would be greatly appreciated, depending on how much was nearing completion. Does anybody know what is happening with his archives?(A note to Mute- wouldn't it be better to amalgamate the Fad Gadget and Frank Tovey forums?)

If he hasn´t recorded anything yet, but at least written a few songs, it might be a nice idea to release them through a tribute-album. Different bands could record them with their certain sounds. I´m sure, there are quite a few Mute-acts that would like to join this project. I´d love to hear Martin Gore singing one of Frank´s songs, for example. As well as Nick Cave. Maybe then, some more people would recognize Frank´s music. So many people became famous after their death. So why not Frank?

Herr Ronny's idea is great. Would love to see some of the engineers, producers and musical collaborators that Frank worked with do a tribute album. Frank's influence was always far greater than the financial rewards he received, so it would be great for his family to see some publishing royalties. Everyone over to www.franktovey.de to work out the details! |

It was rumoured ages ago that there would be a Fad Gadget tribute album overseen by John Fryer! It ended up an April fools but what an idea! Here's what was rumoured to be happening - In a recent interview with Side-line magazine, Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode producer John Fryer said he was recently approached by Mute Record's Daniel Miller and Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan to produce a tribute album of song from their good friend Fad Gadget. Fad Gadget, whose real name was Frank Tovey, was a pioneer of electronic dance music in the 1980's and died two years ago on April 3rd 2002. Fryer says that Miller and Gahan had been talking about doing a tribute CD last year, one year after Tovey's death, but Gahan was tied up in other projects at the time. "The time is right," said Fryer, "There were many bands who were influence by this mad genius. The funny thing is that everyone who I have approached loves the idea." "Depeche Mode was at one time the opening act for Fad Gadget and he opened for them on their last tour. The guys really want this to happen." Fryer says others, besides Gahan, that may play on the CD include Mute artist's Moby, Non, Appliance, Laibach, Throbbing Gristle, and Nick Cave. Other artist who have expressed interest include Richard H Kirk, Siouxsie Sioux, Bill Leeb (Delirium), and Gary Numan. As a side note, Stephan Groth (Apoptyma Berzerk, Fairlight Children) has also said in a recent interview with Side-line, that he would like to do a project of Fad Gadget/ Frank Tovey covers with bands that the industrial music innovator influenced. "When working on a song, or touring I will turn on a Fad Gadget CD and others around will chime in. He really help start it all. " Groth said he knows members of Covenant, Icon of Coil, VNV Nation, Echo Image, and Beborn Beton would be attracted to a futurepop tribute to Fad Gadget.
I was sucked in by it but thought it would've been excellent, I would've loved to have seen it happen! Mute if you need someone to oversee a project like this gizza shout!
All the best

yes absolutely. I even started doing a few covers myself of "Back to Nature" and "Swallow It" just for my own tribute on various music forums. I think "Scapegoat" is his best and would love to hear that one covered. Never really been anyone quite like Mr. Tovey. IMO. I love it when someone can write dark catchy tunes and still have a sense of humor about it all. a real genius and truly a pioneer if there ever was one. |

Be careful what you wish for. A tribute is always an act of appreciation BUT traps are to go along with it as well. Remember Depeche Mode tribute LP 'For the Masses'. A compilation album worth mentioning merely few of the artists that did a DM cover with a charm of their own (and by this I definitely DO NOT mean Rammstein whose version of 'Stripped' is definitely one of the worst covers ever made!)... John Fryer is a great producer - alongside Tovey he had a great deal of work with 4AD and it would be a better solution to create sort of This Mortal Coil variant of Tovey's songs - after all, Frank Tovey/Fad Gadget did electronic music with a difference - and these are not just an excuse for someone afterwards to come out and feel free to cover any of his songs just because electronic music is most accessible pulse... In the last few years many cover-projects seemed completely missed out from their actual intentions. And I am not ready for another Marilyn Manson exhibition after his 'originality' with the examples of Bowie, Soft Cell, Eurythmics or Depeche Mode. In that case Fad is better off alone. Although David Gahan's choice is acceptable one. |
