Film soundtrack composer, sometime actor and musical adventurer SIMON FISHER TURNER released 'SHWARMA' on September 30 1996 through Mute. Described by it's creator as "a new beginning", 'SHWARMA' moulds Fisher Turner's experience of creating musical landscapes for such notable directors as Derek Jarman and Michael Almereyda together with his love of found sounds and collaborations from a variety of singular musicians. It is his first "solo" release for Mute.Over 16 pieces of music, 'SHWARMA' plots a global course with tracks recorded in Antigua, Tokyo, Jerusalem, Bangkok and Brixton. The album features the vocal talents of Jocelyn West (formerly of Miranda Sex Garden) Martyn Bates (Eyeless In Gaza), Gina Birch (The Raincoats) and poets Quentin Stevenson and Nasia Hadon. Adding musical spice are The National Achievement Quartet string section, Sergio Avila on woodwind, Kate St John on saxophone, John Byrne on harmonica and Bruce Gilbert's frequency loops. Produced by Fisher Turner himself, it is a work of unrestrained experimentalism that takes the listener on a strange and beautiful voyage across the planet.
