Rough Trade Shops release a new compilation on Mute and this time the theme is indiepop. This is the eighth in their ongoing series of critically acclaimed releases from Mute and is out on 4th October 2004."Rough Trade Shops: Indiepop 1" is the latest in a series of fantastic compilations that began in Feb 2001 with Rough Trade Shops 25 Years, a box set celebrating 25 years of the opening of the first Rough Trade Shop in Kensington Park, West London. Since then, Mute has released Rough Trade Shops compilations dedicated to Electronic music, Rock And Roll, the best of 2002 & 2003, Post Punk and Country, all compiled by the Rough Trade Shops staff. The new collection features two CDs worth of the finest music from a highly influential genre that, until the release of this compilation, has been left largely undocumented. Some of the bands will be familiar in other guises, Stereolab were formed from the ashes of McCarthy whilst others, such as The Vaselines, went on to influence the likes of Nirvana (who famously covered Molly's Lips, the track included on this compilation).Rough Trade Shops have again brought out a timely compilation, with bands such as Josef K and Beat Happening being namechecked by a new generation of musicians from Franz Ferdinand to the antifolk scene and a new underground of indiepop artists emerging worldwide including Love Is All from Sweden and Juniper Moon from Spain (both featured on the compilation).
Fanzines and a DIY ethic, something that has resurfaced recently with the underground music and arts scene, were particularly important to indiepop and the artwork will reflect this with the original artwork for many of the singles plus fanzines and badges from the time.
"Rough Trade Shops: Indiepop 1" compilation features 9 tracks never before available on CD, such as My Bloody Valentine's Paint A Rainbow and AR Kane's When You're Sad, and 16 tracks which are not presently available on CD, including The Pooh Sticks' I know Someone Who Knows Someone Who Knows Alan McGee Quite Well and the Shop Assistants' Safety Net.
A 7" single will precede the album. Featuring four tracks from the compilation from Juniper Moon, Aberfeldy, Primal Scream and Josef K - the last two will be available on 7" for the first time since their original releases in 1985 and 1981 respectively.
